Die Ausstellung „Wach sind nur die Geister“ - Über Gespenster und ihre Medien widmet sich einem auf den ersten Blick unzeitgemäßen Thema: Es geht um die Präsenz des Übernatürlichen, um die Anwesenheit von Geistern und eine durch technische Medien ermöglichte (Trans-)Kommunikation mit dem ‚Jenseits‘. Auftakt der Ausstellung ist das Tonbandarchiv von Friedrich Jürgenson, dem Entdecker des so genannten Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) im Jahr 1959. Ausgehend von dem regen Interesse zeitgenössischer KünstlerInnen an dem Thema fragt die Ausstellung, warum trotz unserer Aufgeklärtheit in regelmäßigen Abständen den jeweils neuen Medien und Technologien irrationale Fähigkeiten zugeschrieben werden – wie z.B. ein Kanal für Botschaften aus dem ‚Jenseits’ zu sein. Die Ausstellung zeigt 22 internationale künstlerische Positionen, die nach der Existenz von Geistern fragen, sich für den Einsatz neuer Medien und Technologien in spiritistischen Zusammenhängen interessieren, sich mit der Sicht- oder Wahrnehmbarmachung von Unsichtbarem beschäftigen und den politischen Implikationen sowie der Ästhetik solcher Phänomene zeitgenössischer Transkommunikation nachspüren.

The exhibition ‘Awake Are Only the Spirits’ – On Ghosts and Their
Media is dedicated to a topic that appears, at first glance,
timeless: it involves the presence of the supernatural – the
appearance of ghosts and (trans-)communication with ‘the beyond’
facilitated by technical media. The exhibition begins with the audio-
tape archive of Friedrich Jürgenson who discovered the so-called
Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) in 1959. As a result of the strong
interest in the topic on behalf of contemporary artists, the
exhibition questions why – despite our faith in the rational – at
regular intervals irrational properties are ascribed to respective
new media and technologies, such as those purportedly serving as
channels for messages from ‘the beyond’. The exhibition shows 22
international artistic positions questioning the existence of ghosts,
exploring the integration of new media and technologies in
spiritualist contexts, investigating the making-visible or making-
perceptible of the invisible, and tracing the political implications
as well as the aesthetics of such contemporary trans-communication
phenomena.

With public transport: From Dortmund’s main railway station take the
subway line U41 in the direction of Clarenberg and get off at “Hörde
Bhf”, walk ten minutes via Hochofenstr. until you reach PHOENIX Halle

of Hörde on Nortkirchenstr., turn left at the corner of Felicitasstr.
